last year Dead Can Dance gave away EPs of live recordings titled Live Happenings Part I and Part II. now Part III is available, and like the others it’s also free. the EP opens with Saltarello, a 13th century Italian piece that DCD made their own in 1990 on their album Aion, and  Brendan Perry introduces thusly, “this next instrumental rocketed to the top of the charts in the summer of 1461″. the other three tracks are The Wind That Shakes The Barley, How Fortunate The Man With None and Dreams Made Flesh. just click here to get Live Happenings (Part III)

below is Toward The Within, a recording of a performance at the Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica, California from 1993

it gives me great pleasure to inform readers about my old friend Dec Hickey’s new book From Heaven to Heaven, New Order Live, The Early Years (1981-1984) at Close Quarters which is published at the end of this month. it’s a unique record of a hugely successful, massively influential and truly iconic group that contains over 400 previously unpublished photos, forwards by band members Peter Hook and Stephen Morris and introductions by Paul Morley and Moby

follow this link to read the full press release as well as extracts from the  forwards and introductions. you’ll also find details on how to purchase the book, which is availalable in hardback, the first 750 copies of which come in a limited, numbered, collectors edition with additional treats for the über fan

additionally for those in the UK, the February issue (out now) of  Uncut magazine’s Flashback section has a four page feature on From Heaven to Heaven

below is a live performance of Dreams Never End that was filmed in November 1981 in New York, the studio version of which appears on New Order’s debut album Movement

Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble – Mr. Machine

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , on October 29, 2011 by 3nipples

The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble have just released their second album of rather unique acoustic techno. Mr. Machine is a very worthy follow-up to last years You Make Me Real. it’s essentially more of the same though the band are now an ensemble and with added Emika, whose voice combines beautifully with their sound. and well it should since she’s guesting on a cover of one of her own songs, the original version of which can be found on her self titled debut album, released at the beginning of this month

here’s the album teaser trailer

and this is the video for Pretend feat. Emika

lastly, this is Emika performing Pretend live in Berlin earlier this year

The Cinematic Orchestra – In Motion 2011

Posted in film/dvd, free download, music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on July 22, 2011 by 3nipples

The Cinematic Orchestra continue the In Motion series with a 2nd installment and a return to the Barbican in London on October 1st

In Motion is an ongoing live event curated by the band, where a selection of films chosen by the artists will be given original scores

The Cinematic Orchestra have invited Dorian Concept + Tom Chant, Grey Reverend, Austin Peralta, Kutmah and of course themselves to perform exclusive scores

this is a gig i’m rather excited about (my tickets arrived today) as i’ve not seen The Cinematics since the release of their second album, Every Day, in 2002

in 2003 they recorded a soundtrack for the 1929 silent film, Man With A Movie Camera, from Russian director Dziga Vertov. it was given a limited DVD release which i highly recommend seeing, if you can find a copy. their music fits the images perfectly. should you not be able to find a copy then simply get the album as it’s superb. here are a couple of tracks from that recording

Reel Life (Evolution II)

Work It! (Man with the Movie Camera)

Goldie & DK – Solid Steel Radio Show (15th July 2011)

Posted in dj mix, free download, music, podcast with tags , , , , , , , , on July 15, 2011 by 3nipples

Goldie drops a mix to celebrate the release of his Fabric Live mix CD and it’s straight in with the soulful vibe of Marcus Intalex & ST Files and D Kay & Lee. then it’s back to ’94 with Dillinja and we continue in a 90′s vein with Boymerang, Doc Scott and classic Goldie, before closing with Rufige Kru

DK steps in to close the show with a look at recent and upcoming tracks from the vast Ninja Tune, Big Dada, Counter and Brainfeeder stable. tracks from the Samiyam and Wiley albums are followed by the Two Fingers mix of Amon Tobin‘s new single ‘Surge’. Mr Scruff is on ‘Wobble Control’ and Toddla T gets an Andrew Weatherall remix on ‘Watch Me Dance’ with Roots Manuva‘s version shortly after. then it’s forthcoming singles from Martyn, Raffertie and Offshore before ending on the accoustic sounds of Jono McCleery and Fink

(i didn’t write this entry. i’m at work and shouldn’t even be tinkering with non-work stuff. i stole the above from the relevant Ninja Tune/Soundcloud page. yeah i know, i’m a terrible man)

Fink (acoustic, live, unreleased and remixed)

Posted in music with tags , , , , , , , , on January 27, 2011 by 3nipples

Fink. he’s just fucking great isn’t he? i could try to be creative in what i write about him. about how his music moves me and has been a constant companion over the past few years during major lows and soaring highs,  but why bother when right here i can let the songs speak, or sing rather, for themselves

and instead of simply uploading singles or even album tracks i’ve gathered together what one would traditionally call rarities. six tracks that have been uploaded to Soundcloud at finkmusic, Ninja Tune & Big Dada and by myself and placed right here. 3nipples is more pleasing on the eye  than Soundcloud, though that is one truly great site

enjoy!

so first up is an acoustic rendition of Maker from the album Sort of Revolution. this is lifted from the Sort of Versions 5 track EP

Make It Good from Distance And Time first appeared as If You Stayed Over on Bonobo’s 2006 album Days To Come. this performance was recorded with Bonobo, live at the Pompidou in Paris and with Andreya Triana taking over on vocals

following on from the last track is an unreleased demo of Make It Good

the next three tracks are all mixes of the single See It All. first Sideshow (Fink’s DJ moniker) takes an echo box and compression chamber and skillfully strips parts of the song and fits them together into brand new shapes. secondly is a remix by Dlid that builds on the originals guitar tapping percussion with beats and handclaps. lastly Ninja newcomer Emika throws in off beat sounds and some lovely deep tones and allows the song to drift in and out of itself

and to close here’s a performance of  Blueberry Pancakes that was recorded in Lyon, France in 2009

album discography:

Fresh Produce (NTONE39) released 01/06/2000

Biscuits For Breakfast (ZEN104) released 24/04/2006

Distance and Time (ZEN136) released 01/10/2007
