lowlight – i can hear the snow fall

lowlight creates mixes that are usually ambient in nature and usually have a theme, such as autumn, sleep music and stargazing. for this mix the theme is snow and you’ll find a lot of piano led music, starting with Nils Frahm from his excellent Felt album and continuing with artists that are new to this writer as well as familiar names such as Cliff Martinez, Max Richter and Harold Budd

here’s a few words from lowlight about this mix, “For some reason,when I think of falling snow, the instrument that comes to mind is the piano. Maybe it’s from years of listening to Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown Christmas album. So it’s no surprise that there is a fair amount of piano music in this “snow” mix. We didn’t have any snow yet but I had been thinking about doing a “first snow” mix for awhile & decided to throw one together Friday night (16th December). Then I woke up Saturday morning to a light dusting of snow on the ground. Maybe next I should do a mix for winning the lottery. As I said there is a lot of piano music in here. I think this mix works well as an early season “snow” mix versus the more bleak mid winter drones that will show up later.“

Beta Hector – Tru Thoughts Koko Party Promo Mix

the Tru Thoughts label had themselves a big old part at KOKO in Camden, London last Saturday. to help promote the night they got a few of the artists involved to make short mixes. this one is from Beta Hector, a Brighton based chap who earlier this year released Sunbeam Insulin, one of my favourite albums of 2011. so here’s, “a roller coaster ride of breaks, beats, bass, funk and soul“. there’s a few other mixes in this short series which you’ll find by going here

Hidden Orchestra – Outlook Festival Mixtape

Hidden Orchestra’s bandleader, Joe Acheson, has made this special mixtape to mark their gig at the Outlook Festival in Croatia later this year. unlike the previous Night Walks On Vinyl and Footsteps mixtapes, this mix is focussed on beats of around 140bpm, as a nod to Outlook’s ‘dubstep extravaganza’ lineup

it’s another eclectic selection of mashups and reworkings which also includes some of the heavier stuff from previous mixtapes

Hidden Orchestra – Night Walks on Vinyl Mixtape

in celebration of the release of the Night Walks album on vinyl, Joe Acheson of Hidden Orchestra has put together this ‘mixtape’. like his earlier Footsteps Mix, this is a thoughtfully compiled selection that combines both exclusive and familiar tracks as well as plenty of engaging spoken word odds and sods

the band are playing live on their European tour during March and April and throughout the festival season. details here
