one of my favourite musical discoveries of 2011 has been neo-classical composer and performer Ólafur Arnalds. i’ve probably listened to his music more than anyones during the past year, so despite the following documentary being from 2009 (filmed during a UK tour in October 2008) it’s new to me and i suspect plenty of others too. it runs for about 24 minutes
Breadth Control, the debut album from David Vangel, is a mind altering affair loaded with emotive melodies, explosive dynamics, and savage gauntlets of fierce drum programming. it’s a fusion of sampling and live instrumentation, including elements of hip hop, jazz, indie rock, electronic, psychedelia, and what is known as ‘world’ music. Breadth Control is intense. orchestral string arrangements and an overall cinematic quality creates abstract visions ranging from optimism to melancholy. the production is fantastic as is the art work, and vinyl fans can get it in white
it was released earlier this summer but i only stumbled across it today, hence this post. check out the single, Sandpaper Script, which is also free to download
